Sunthetic is a unique accessory designed specifically for iPhone 6 and 7 models. Knezevic's design follows the distinctive design language of the iPhone, aiming to create a slim, aesthetically pleasing case with simple lines and smooth surfaces. The case is made from injection-molded green ABS-PC and recycled ABS, reflecting the designer's commitment to sustainable materials.
The Sunthetic solar case uses a high-quality Sunpower mono crystalline solar panel to recharge the incorporated battery and the phone's battery simultaneously. The case's functionality is simplified by an accelerometer sensor, which acts as an on and off button activated by turning and tapping the solar panel.
The project began in October 2015 in Belgrade and was first presented at the Web Summit in Lisbon in November 2016. The team, led by CEO Gerardo Di Giuseppe, is ready for production and plans to start crowdfunding in March 2017. The design process involved extensive research into existing battery case designs and current technology solutions, with a focus on increasing usability and sustainability.
Despite the challenges of designing a small, well-shaped object that would appeal to end users and comply with Apple's strict regulations, Knezevic and his team succeeded in creating a product that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The Sunthetic solar case is a testament to the potential of green technology in the realm of everyday accessories.
The Sunthetic solar case has already received recognition for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Digital and Electronic Device Design Award in 2017. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, with a focus on strong technical characteristics and artistic skill. As Knezevic and his team continue their work, they are in the process of obtaining a patent for the Sunthetic solar case.
